You Are Perfect Just As You Are

In 2001 (as long ago as that?) we all sat entranced as Mark Darcy declared to Bridget Jones that he liked her just as she was.

Perfect Just As You Are“I don’t think you’re an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother’s pretty interesting.

And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let whatever’s in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences…

But the thing is, um, what I’m trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much. Just as you are.”

Is that every woman’s romantic fantasy – that a great guy will love her just as she is? That it doesn’t matter that she’s overweight or cooks blue soup?

No, that’s not a fantasy. That’s reality.

All over the world husbands and boyfriends continue to love their wives and girlfriends despite character flaws and excess pounds. You don’t need to be a perfect human being, just a perfect example of you.

That’s not a license to let yourself go and behave badly. Don’t take him for granted if you want him to stay in love with you. But you also don’t have to stress out if you sometimes slip up or don’t always look your best. You will be beautiful in your guy’s eyes with or without full makeup. You can get away with being in a bad mood sometimes.

If you think about it, no guy you’ve ever loved has ever been perfect either, so why would he expect it of you?

Yet to find “the one”?

If you’ve yet to find your Mark Darcy who loves you just the way you are, get out there and mix in those places you feel at home in, doing those things you love to do. That way the real you shines out.

And remember to be yourself (albeit dressed up and on your best behavior) right from day one of dating so that he falls in love with you and not with some fantasy who doesn’t exist.

Oh and here’s a reminder of that great scene from the movie to take you back to 2001. It makes me smile as it reminds me of a great trip to New York with my husband – we first saw the movie there.

  1. Great point you make!
I’ve been in relationships with women who were introverted, and with women who were feisty. I liked both of them how they were, I didn’t try to get the introverted one to be feisty, or vice versa, because I wouldn’t want a woman to ‘mould’ me, so why would I try it with them? Being themselves was just fine for me!

  4. This striving for perfection may be more due to the desire to continually move on than it is for relationship mastering.

Thanks for your comment Roy. I’m not sure we all want to move on as much as keep up with all the perfect examples of womanhood in the media – courtesy of Photoshop of course and all those women portrayed who are shining examples of everything. We forget that they show the highlights of each woman’s life and not the dreary bits!

Great post and I absolutely love that movie! Such a great line too. I agree it’s totally important to stay true to who you are as a person because if he or she falls in love with you under any other circumstance it probably isn’t going to stick. Nobody wants to start a relationship based on a lie or wrong impression…no matter how small.

We live in a world that tends to transform us into something else. We don’t have time to pay deep attention to anything, even just to be who we are.

You made a good point. I started to take things slowly and limit myself to a certain distractions so that we can have time to discover about ourselves and be the person we want to be!
